Winter is definately here.
Well the last few days have been cold and quiet, just like me.
Ebay sales are quiet, although I have a massive mountain of stuff to mail out (I have been busily packaging it since ten this morning which is what happens when you don't worry about things for a few days).
Con came by and gave me a guitar lesson the other day. I learned more in thirty minutes with him than I did in two weeks of mucking around by myself. I now have to find time to practice using my fingers to do stuff so I get better at it.
Books finished recently:
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. Quite a masterpiece for a first novel, and sufficiently different to the movie (which was more of a hatchet-job on psychiatry) to make it worth reading.
Movies Seen Recently:
Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls. Groovy 60's exploitation movie about a rock band's corruption by LA and the endless parties, drugs and orgies. Climaxes with a bizarre series of murders which would do the Manson Family proud. 3 out of 5.
DVDs/Videos/DivXs Seen Recently
*The Return Of The King. The finale of the trio. 5 out of 5.
Spooks Season 1. Issued in the USA as MI-5 to avoid offending people of colour, this competent British spy-thriller production has only 6 episodes per season but they are all good. 4 out of 5.
*Hudson Hawk. Forget the DaVinci Code or Alias, Bruce Willis did the real expose back in the 80s about the plan of megalomaniac plutocrats and CIA masterminds code-named after chocolate bars to blackmail a New Jersey catburglar into stealing the pieces of his greatest invention hidden inside artworks. 5 out of 5.
*Ripley's Game. Not as good as the first film and not as good on subsequent viewings either. Almost a remake of The American Friend. 3 out of 5.
New Music listened to lately
Home - The Dixie Chicks. Good bluegrass, with a couple of real knock-out tracks. They are no Steve Earles but I think I will be coming back for more.
Restaurants Patronised Lately
Louis and Franko's - The Pizza there is hard to beat and the place looks classy too.
Post-Mao Cafe - Lovely little place at the North end of Little Bourke Street. Nice big posters of the Chairman plus his preferred dishes on a special menu!
Bars Scandalised Recently
303 - 303 High Street Northcote.
Bender Bar - High Street Thornbury.
Re-Vault. The RMIT student bar hosts the Melbourne 2600 meetings on the first Friday of every month. They do a fair plate of Thai rice as well.
